I have had experience with many DAW’s over the years. If I’m feeling nestagic, I’d say my favorite was SADiE Solutions. I use this DAW in college for general mixing and editing. Later, I used it in a mastering environment in Nashville. My latest DAW, is Logic X on a MacBook Pro. I went through my Pro-Tools phase. All that to say, you may need to experiment a little to find the one you like. The good news it you can do that without the dedicated hardware that used to be required.
